Patrons of a late-night restaurant in Greektown witnessed some of the first bursts of the weekend’s violence as eight men and women punched each other, wrestled on the floor and threw chairs across the room.

One person knocked to the ground began firing shots, wounding two people as well as striking himself in the leg early Saturday morning at the Taco Burrito King in the 800 block of West Jackson Boulevard, according to police.

They were among 31 people shot in Chicago from Friday afternoon to Monday morning, police said.  Two of the wounded died.

More than 3,000 people have been shot in the city this year, down from the record violence of last year but up appreciably from other recent years, according to data kept by the Tribune.  There have been at least 566 homicides this year, down from 617 this time last year.
